What a great start to our year! The students have been working thoughtfully, collaborating respectfully, and settling into our class routines. We’re all looking forward to a great year here in 4B!
In Math we worked to create a community of math learners. We used lessons from the “Week of Inspirational Math” to grow our understanding of what it means to be a math learner. We discussed 5 principles that will guide our work throughout the year. These principles are
In Reading we’ve been working to review our understanding of different genres, choose just right books, talk about our reading, and build our reading stamina. Later this week we’ll talk about how we write about reading in 4th grade.
In Writing we’ve been setting goals for this year. First, students brainstormed some things they’d like to do while they’re in 4th grade. Then, they chose one goal and organized their thinking into a graphic organizer. After that they wrote a first draft and now we’re publishing our writing! This week we’ll introduce writer’s notebooks so students have a place to gather all of their fabulous ideas.
In Science we discussed many of the amazing things scientists do. Then we practiced making claims, based on evidence, supported by reasoning. We also began our unit on botany and will be learning about different types of plants and seeds.
