In MATH we are kicking things off with our study of arrays, factors, and multiplicative comparisons. Reviewing and building these foundational multiplication skills will help students as they encounter more challenging multiplication problems later in the year.
In SCIENCE we spent some time studying common characteristics and skills of different scientists to add to our understanding of what it means to be a scientist. The goals were to a) emphasize that there are many different types of scientists studying a wide variety of topics in diverse settings and b) showcase the characteristics and skills students can apply to their own scientific inquiry. We also began to scratch the surface of our first unit, "Changes in the Earth's Surface." The students brought some incredible background knowledge to our discussion and I'm excited to embark on this unit with the class!
In READING students practiced choosing just-right books, thinking deeply while they read, writing about their thinking, and sharing those thoughts in small groups with their peers. In the next few weeks we will move into our first unit of study, focusing on character development in narrative texts and how it can help us better understand the text as a whole.
In WRITING students practiced different brainstorming strategies and worked to build up their writing stamina. They also began writing about their goals for 4th grade in order to set goals for themselves and practice going through the writing process.
